As people get older the body tends to become weaker if not taken care of properly. One of the many manifestations of advancing age is muscle and joint pain. We often hear people complaining of painful joints especially of brittle knees. But what exactly are muscle and joint pains.

First off, joints are the parts of the body, specifically the skeletal system that connects bones together and allows movement. Since they are probably the most used part of the body, it is inevitable that they break down due to wear and tear. Pain and inflammation are just two of the symptoms of weakened joints. They may also be caused by injuries and other medical conditions.

Most medical professionals recommend medications to treat joint pain. However, such medicines whether oral, topical or administered through injections often have side effects. If you rather not risk developing the potential side effects, there are safer alternatives you can try. Here is a list of the different ways of relieving muscle and joint pain naturally:

  • You can visit a physical therapist for proper treatment on your sore joints. You will undergo a program involving exercises, massages and other processes that aim to strengthen your joint muscles, alleviate the pain, and improve mobility.
  • Exercising regularly and maintaining the right weight will greatly reduce the pressure on the painful joints, especially the knees and ankles. Preferable physical activities are swimming, biking, walking, and riding stationary bikes.
  • Acupuncture and acupressure are popular alternatives to joint pain relief. It is also a good way to let your mind and body relax.
  • Apply ice wrapped in a towel or placed in an ice bag on the painful area for about 15 minutes every hour. Do this at the onset of pain. If the pain still exists the following day, apply ice up to 5 times for 15 minutes per application. This process of ice application is called cryotherapy.
  • Hydrotherapy is also a great way to ease the pain. Soak the affected area or fill the bath tub with warm water and get in. Take as much time as you want and keep your body, especially your painful joints soaked and relaxed.
  • To make your relaxing bath a little more soothing and more effective in treating joint pain, add a few drops of any essential oil. Aside from that, aromatherapy is a great way to de-stress.
  • You can also apply essential oils directly on the aching joints. Massage the oil gently making sure the strokes travel to the direction and not away from the heart. You can also use menthol rubs.
  • Drinking a concoction of two teaspoons each of honey and apple cider vinegar mixed in warm water twice every day is another natural way to ease the pain.
  • A stressed mind and tired body will not do you or your painful joints any good. Give your body some time to rest and rejuvenate. Sometimes a little downtime is all you need.
  • For those who can’t afford to be debilitated by aching joints can use splints, straps or braces to prevent the affected area from moving. Crutches, canes and other walking aides can be useful to keep you moving and going through your day even if your joints are immobilized.

The best way to go through muscle and joint pain treatment is to get the opinion of experts and go from there.
