What is Joint Pain?

Joint pain or arthralgia is caused by damage of the tendons, ligaments, or surrounding tissues of the joint.  When this occurs, performing physical movements will be difficult and painful.  Joint pain is common, and your risk of developing one increase as you get older. There are ways you can do at the comfort of your own home for relief joint pain.

Different diseases are also attributed to cause joint pain such as:

  • Bone cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Lupus
  • Gout
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Lyme disease
  • Sprains and strains
  • Tendinitis

What are the Symptoms of Joint Pain?

There is pain and stiffness in exerting physical movements accompanied with swelling, warmth, and fever. Joint pain is felt when performing activities that involve pressure and heavy resistance.

When to Consult a Medical Professional

Immediately see a physician when one of the following occurs:

  • A joint pain lasts for more than a week
  • Sudden swelling
  • Joint deformity
  • Bleeding
  • Bone or tendon is exposed
  • The joint feel warm and tender
  • Unwanted/Sudden weight loss
  • Mysterious symptoms

 

Relief Joint Pain—what can you do at home

Applying an ice-pack to the joint two to three times daily for twenty minutes will help soothe the burning sensation; using a therapeutic gel pack is even better. Rest and avert doing any activity that may worsen the pain, and take medications to reduce inflammation. You can take ibuprofen, aspirin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; read the package description, and take note of the dosage you should take.

For minor joint pain, exercising improves flexibility and mobility; this should be done by overweight patients, too. Avoiding certain foods and beverages relieve joint pain such as organ meats, shellfish, asparagus, peas, beans, mushrooms, oatmeal, beer, and wine are rich in purines that caused pain in the joint.

What to Expect in Examination of Joint Pain

Be prepared in answering the following questions of your physician:

  • Which joint is painful?
  • How long have you been enduring this pain?
  • Is the pain mild or severe?
  • Are you suffering from an illness? / What is your illness?
  • Do medications, self-care methods help?
  • What other symptoms have you felt?
  • Do you feel any numbness?
  • Does performing physical activities caused pain or lessen it?

You may undergo series of tests such as joint x-ray, blood test, and blood differentia. You can also join physical therapy and joint rehabilitation.

Medical Treatment for Joint Pain

The physician must diagnose the intrinsic cause of your joint pain before giving the best medical treatment plan. Surgery may be suggested when there is damaged to the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. Anti-inflammatory drugs and other medications will be surely prescribed.

A follow-up examination by the physician after the treatment is required. This is when your tests results and the effects of your medications are recorded and discussed. Your physician will advise you about self-care at home for relief joint pain, and supervise you during healing period.
